Movie making thing-y

Attention cybergeeks! I'm in the middle of a project for school where I am to create a trailer-esque short film of famous film scenes through time. My problem is that I don't have any idea of what kind of movie making program to use. So... do any of y'all have a suggestion of something free and simple to use?

Well, if you're using Linex, I've heard Cinelerra is quite good (and I've heard whisperings of a Mac port, but I don't know if that actually exists or if that's just a myth).

If you're on a mac or PC, your options are rather limited. I'd try *cough* using black-market methods.
