What did people think about the finale?
Overall, I liked it - most of my negatives were just about the pacing of the last episode. The classic case of trying to fit everything in at the end. But that's not to take away from just how epic that hour (and the past 10) have been.
Learning of Amon and Tarrlock's past together was a great scene. And although I cringe any time I see something modern in LOK (plastic surgery . . . hmmm) the story of Yakone's life and the effect it had on his sons just summed them up perfectly.
Seeing just how much their father had influenced them without them even knowing it was amazing. All three of them wanted power over Republic City, and although going after it through different means (Politics, Gangs, Equalists) the similarities had always been there. Hell, even Korra pointed out just how alike the brothers were before anyone knew they were related!
Now a murder/suicide in a "Kids Show". I was stunned. It was just a beautiful scene you'd expect to see in a film. Not on a saturday morning cartoon. I guess Tarrlock just knew how dangerous his bloodbending family was, and probably for the first time in his life did something noble.
Onto the Shipping! I'm really not the biggest fan of Mako/Korra. I kind of understood the shipping wars in Avatar: The Last Airbender, because they were effectively still kids (having crushes even though it wasn't the time for it). I'm not entirely sure what my issue was. I guess I just wanted them to forget about relationships and focus on the plot - but that's just me.
Bolin's character has also been a downside for me. I love him, but he really doesn't get much to do at all. I understand he's the comedy character, but that does that mean he has to be weak as well? I hope in the future he gets a chance to show his skills.
Korra's Airbending breakthrough was perfect (as was Aang's description later on). Being faced with the sight of Mako losing his bending, she finally tapped into her spiritual side.
I liked how compared to Tenzin's very intricate airbending techniques, Korra's aggressive style continued to show through. Literally assaulting Amon with some "air punches" (who knew?). It's finally time for her to learn airbending properly, something I look forward to next season.
Speaking of Next season, this is where I feel the finale let me down. I did notice little snippets of storylines that could be advanced to next year:
The arrival of Bumi.
Airbending training.
Asami's father issues.
But it did feel as if this was the Ending to the entire Series. Seeing Aang/Energybending/Avatar State/Makorra/Lin's Bending all within a few minutes. I feel as though a lot of this could have been saved until next year.
Looking back to ATLA. The first season finale gave us a clear understanding of what to expect - and it was exciting! A new villain introduced - journing to a new area. That's what a feel was missing sadly.
But anyway, it was an amazing ending to an amazing season. I'm just sharing this with the internet because I can't voice my opinions to any real people
