So RU-Con 2011 has come to an end, and what a success even if I do say so myself. The Con and Review Race both started off really slow, and I must admit, at first, I thought the long wait and hype had had the reverse effect and caused people to lose interest.
With that in mind I decided to open all Q+As straight away and have them run for the duration of the Con, and I was really impressed with how everybody participated in those. I couldn’t stress enough before and during the Con how much the success of the event relied on our relative small member base – “participation is key!” – so I was glad to see people posting questions, but mostly because it’s nice to take interest in one another’s work. I know we all say we do, and we all read and write a review from time to time, but the Q+A sessions really enabled us to take a more active role as well as allowing the writer’s to explain some of their decisions and direction. Thanks to everyone, but especially Blake and Necktie who really stepped up his game by posting video reviews!
The Review Race didn’t really pick up speed until the second half of the Con. Necktie had secured first place at the beginning with a healthy string of reviews, and for a long time he had no competitors. I’ll be honest, part of me was kind of hoping the “5 person minimum” rule would come into play and I wouldn’t have to give away money! ;] Johno and Blake eventually joined in the race, and even Ceb threw in one review for good measure. Whilst Johno and Blake raced neck-and-neck, Indy burst onto the track with movie reviews earning him buckets of points and stealing the lead. Johno and Blake were so busy worrying about each other they didn’t even notice him coming. On the last stretch of the Race, both Necktie and Lie pumped out a few more reviews, though by this point it really wasn’t enough to take the lead. Though Necktie especially seemed to be trying his best to rack up those points, Johno wasn’t having any of it and continued to review one step ahead, completly steaming ahead of all competition. So it’s a huge congratulations to Johno who stole first place and has won himself a nice tidy sum of $55!
I was quite anxious at the start of the Con because it did start off really slowly and I just wasn’t sure whether or not it would pick up. Thankfully it did and it was nice to see all of our regulars participating. On a more personal note, I’ve been really busy in my personal life at the moment for a whole load of different reasons I won’t go into, so I was also worried that that would affect the Con (in a way it did, with Real Fantasy, Rapture and Final Destination 6 not getting released during the Con as scheduled). Fortunately though I all worked out, so thank you again.
RU-Con 2012 is something I’ve already been thinking about (sometimes I let my imagination get the better of me and forget that we’re limited to a free forum!) with an August 2012 date in mind. I’d probably bring the Review Race back and I’ve got some awesome ideas for other competitions all with real prizes...
Thank you everyone,
