The Associated Press Reported on December 9 that by the year 2010 cancer will overtake heart disease as the number one killer on Earth, and that deaths due to cancer would double by 2030, according to the trend they are seeing. Experts at the World Health Organization say that the rise in cancer deaths is due to rising tobacco use in developing countries such as China and India where billions of people live. Also, 40% of smokers live in these countries. And just to add to the problem, the world population is quickly rising as well, thus there are more people to get cancer in the first place. Cancer hasn’t really been known in developing countries, and in fact in poorer countries cancer kills more than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.
I was in total shock when I read this article. I didn’t think cancer was such a common thing, even though I know some people affected by it. But I’m not sure if this sudden rise in cancer cases and deaths is due to the rise in smoking, as the article says, or the fact that more people are getting checked for cancer, and more people are getting diagnosed. I’m not sure if there is more cancer, or if we’re just finding it now. Our technology has improved in the last 50 years that we could now, just be able to find these cancers. Also, smoking causes heart disease as well as certain cancers. Overall, even though this article shocked me at first after reading it and absorbing the information in it, and thinking about it, I realized that the conclusion made by the health officials may or may not be an accurate conclusion to draw.
