“I’m back!”
Just like his Teach booth yesterday show runner Dale ‘ChilledDC’ Clarke made an enthusiastic entrance to the stage for the debut of his brand new show Pulse. Clarke started off by saying how he was thankful that everyone could come out today, especially those who returned after putting up with him yesterday for the Teach booth – “Usually people meet me once and run away, so I’m surprised to see some faces I saw yesterday in here. Clearly you’re a glutton for punishment.”
Dale revealed that unlike yesterday he couldn’t get the entire main cast out here because “just letting them talk would give away massive spoilers. That’s why I have them locked in my cellar in between filming”. He did however introduce a few cast members, bringing out Damon Grey (Jordan), Summer Glau (Eva), Gael Garcia Bernal (Dante) and Candice Accola (Amelia).
Clarke went into some of the inspiration for the show, saying that “I got the initial idea during a power cut last year when I was just chilling in my house and suddenly I was in complete darkness with absolutely nothing to do because nearly everything we do is dependent on technology. So that’s where the show gets its routes, and then I threw in some super powered people just for the hell of it.” He went on to say that the ‘Pulse Children’ as they are called in the show are much more important than having no power. “The characters are key, yes there’s no technology anymore but there is a reason for that and it all comes back to why these characters have these powers and why they lived when no other child did.”
Damon Grey spoke about filming the show, admitting that getting in shape was a difficult task. “I had to put on a lot of muscle before filming started, because my character is this rough and tough survivalist who goes out into the woods and kills things. I am not like that.” He joked, before adding that Dale joined him in his training. “The cast who had to do that training all met up at the same gym the first day and Dale was already there. He ended up doing everything that we did.”
“I just didn’t want to be the skinniest guy on set.” Clarke joked.
Summer Glau, who got a resounding response when she made her entrance, spoke about how different the show was to her other cult following shows. “Most science fiction shows are founded in having these big technological differences with our own world, like Firefly and Dollhouse, but Pulse strips all of that away. It’s science fiction without any technology which just sounds bizarre, but it works really, really well.” She added that her character was “a lot of fun to play, she’s another strong badass woman who can handle herself, but she’s a bit more emotionally connected that some of the other characters I’ve played. Plus she has visions of the future, so there’s always that.”
Candice Accola got the opportunity to speak about how difficult playing a blind character was, admitting that “it isn’t easy acting that you can’t see, it’s really difficult, especially when we’re on set and Dale’s behind the camera making ridiculous faces to try and crack people up.” Clarke admitted that he “has a bit too much fun on set sometimes.”
Gael Garcia Bernal praised the depth of the characters, saying that they “all have their own motivations for everything they do. We’re finishing up filming right now and I still have no idea whether I’m a good guy or a bad guy, that’s how much these character’s morality changes as the show goes on.” He also admitted that every time they were waiting for a new script he’d get nervous if Clarke rang him. “Dale likes to call us in and tell us face to face if we’re getting killed off, and there’s a lot of death in this show. You don’t want to be the one getting the call of death.”
Dale Clarke proceeded to introduce the episode, saying that it’s possibly the most ambitious piece he’s ever done because there’s so much to introduce and only half of the main characters even feature in it. “The whole thing is madness and I might just have a breakdown while we’re screening it”.
