2012 is going to be so amazing.
I cannot wait. The titular movies that are promised for us this year are bound to make the film geek in us rejoice. With that said, here are my top ten most anticipated for 2012. Please tell me yours, too.
10. Only God Forgives
Drive topped off my Best Films of 2011 thread. Based on that fact alone, the idea that the director, Nicholas Winding Refn, is teaming up with Ryan Gosling again to do a "violent, mafia, western" in Thailand makes my mouth drool with anticipation.
9. Moonrise Kingdom
I dig Wes Anderson's work. Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums were really great times, and even his weakest endeavor, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, was something I enjoyed. So when I hear that Moonrise Kingdom has his usual players (Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray) has some new ones (Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton) and is set in the 60's in a New England town? Yeah, I get excited.
8. Wreck-It-Ralph
Pixar's Brave should have been in this list, but for some reason, that trailer didn't excite me. I found it boring. In fact, I don't think I finished it. But Disney has another endeavor: one called Wreck-It-Ralph that, based on the premise alone, got me giddy. So when a villain, arcade character (already a win) named Ralph decides he doesn't want to be bad anymore, he leaps through various arcade games in hopes of finding a better role. Are you kidding me? Of course, I'm there.
7. Looper/Gravity
I team these two up because they're both original pieces of science fiction cinema, both heralded by excellent directors.
Looper, by Rian Johnson, whose Brick and The Brothers Bloom were amazing, has Joseph Gordon Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels... Garrett Dillahunt... and a time-traveling-hitman story. C'mon.
Graivty, by Alfonso Cuaron, is going to be spectacular according to what I know. Starting George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, it's a tragic space story with an opener that's rumored to be a continuous 20 minute shot. ...Think about that for a while.
6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Over the Misty Mountains... cold...
Martin Freeman looks so comfortable in the role of Bilbo, and Benedict Cumberbatch is said to voice the dragon, Smaug. Perfect.
Absolute chills when Thoren Oakenshield started singing the Misty Mountains song. And then the pounding score by Shore promises a golden Middle-Earth shot beautifully by Peter Jackson. Welcome back, sir. As Agent Smith once said: We've missed you.
5. The Avengers
The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, First Avengers: Captain America... and now finally, the time has arrived. No more post-credits. The actual Avengers movie. The one we've been waiting for. With the group uniting ready to fight off what is Loki and his army of Skrull. And don't send me nasty PM's ranting on how that's a spoiler. If you didn't think Skrull were going to be the number one enemy in The Avengers... go watch Spider-Man 3, please.
4. The Hunger Games
That trailer. My, my. That trailer. Brilliantly edited and told. Big fan of the books, and the movie seems to be going the right way. Cannot wait to see the actual games in the big screen. It's going to be majestic and frightening.
3. The Dark Knight Rises
...Listen, I can't wait for this movie. I can't. Everyone's waited patiently since 2008 for this thing, and the fact that it's coming out in six months is proof that maybe, just maybe, there is a God up there. The anticipation for this thing is off the roof, and I can't wait for it as much as the other guy, but why isn't number one? Because Bane's voice really discouraged me. When I saw the trailer first, I was confused. How could people not understand him? Then I saw the prologue, and was like, "Oh, that's why." I'm not saying that's why the movie is going to be horrible and bad; I'm one hundred percent sure it isn't, but still. There are two more movies to go. Don't hate me. And As Dean Winchester once said to me, "I'm going to kick midgets if this movie doesn't come out any sooner." Couldn't have said it better myself.
2. Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino is it. He's a quixotic director of amazing talent, who has done not a single bad film. I said this. I love all of his films. You can argue, and probably be right, that Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 were horrible and blah, blah-- but whatever, man. Can you name me another western, samurai, revenge saga told in contemporary times like that? So now he tackles a western-slave-Southern that has Leonardo DiCrapio playing the main baddie and Kurt "Snake" Russell a slave trainer to later have them fight to the death. I... I just can't wait.
1. Prometheus
I like Ridley Scott. I don't LOVE Ridley Scott. He's one of those directors that I appreciate. He's done a lot of excellent films, excellent contributions to the science fiction genre, too. Blade Runner, Alien, etc. But his latest films were hit and miss (Body of Lies? American Gangster? Robin Hood? Stop, Ridley. Just... stop).
But then a little announcement came along that he might be doing a prologue to Alien, that's not really a prologue to Alien. And then, some months later, a trailer hit. A trailer that got me excited. So excited. A broad, epic, big scoped space opera that has Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender as an Android. Dude.
And when the trailer hits the title card - "P R O M E T H E U S," and it cuts to an anguished face by Rapace screaming, "PLEASE!" I think I'm getting chills just thinking about it. But hell, see for yourself.
And there you have it.
